Hospital Work

This week has been quiet is St. Wolstans. Not much has happened but the good news is that we're coming to the end of our first term as TY students! The time has flew by.

I didn't manage to write a post last week because I got permission to do a block week work experience in Temple Street Children's Hospital!
The week was so interesting, I got to see so much of the hospital and experience many things I didn't think I would get to see.
On Monday I started the day with my family friend who helped me get the work. She's the pain nurse in the hospital, I had the opportunity to meet most of the patients and staff working with her. The day was long and tiring as I spent it running around the hospital but I enjoyed every minute of it.
On Tuesday I got to work in the MRI and x-ray rooms. I spent the first half of the day in MRI. I found this interesting and a doctor there taught me how the machine worked. I got to watch when the kids were put on an anesthetic and see how it worked. When the kids came out of MRI my job was to help gently wake them from the anesthetic.
On Wednesday I worked in the respiratory labs. On this specific Wednesday they were bringing in all the kids with a form of MND (motor neurone disease) although it was interesting to see the tests I did find this day hard as it is hard to just sit by and watch these kids struggle with an incurable disease.

On Thursday I was in the day ward. Here I just helped the nurses look after patients and I got to play with the kids. In this ward I got to see the day to day running of the wards which is cool.

Finally on Friday I spent the day in St Gabriels ward which is a surgical ward. All of the children in here were longer term patients who could range from staying for weeks to years in the hospital. There were a lot of children with terminal illnesses which was heavy to deal with. But even so the nurses and doctors worked tirelessly so these kids were well looked after. They even brought a clown in in the afternoon to entertain the kids.
I was sad to leave on my last day and it has really helped me in my choices for what field to go into after school!
